The Hilltoppers faced off against the Longhorns in a hometown exhibition game

The St. Edward's men's basketball team faced the Division I, No. 18-ranked Texas Longhorns and Hilltopper alumnus and Texas head coach Rodney Terry in an exhibition game at the Moody Center on Monday, October 30, 2023.

Terry was excited to welcome his old team, having graduated from St. Edward's in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in business administration and a minor in physical education. He was a three-year starting point guard and three-time Academic All-Big State Conference selection. Terry also served as an assistant coach on the hilltop for the 1990-91 season.

It was a historic moment for both teams, as according to Terry, the two hadn't met in nearly a century. The St. Edward's community came out in full force to show their support and cheer on their team. "This is a great opportunity for our program and it is all because of Rodney Terry. The hilltop is so proud of him and we can't thank him enough," St. Edward's Head Men's Basketball Coach Andre Cook said.

The Hilltoppers dominated the first half, heading to the locker room ahead at 39-32. The Division II team gave their all on their court and despite the 84-63 loss, kept the game competitive against the tough Texas team.

"[I've got] a lot of respect for [St. Edward's] and what they do both on the court and off the court...they have a team that's good enough to win their conference this year...I'm gonna be cheering for them and I'm their number one fan, just not tonight, [laughs] you know...I think just giving those guys an opportunity to get the exposure and come over and get the chance to play a game against the University of Texas, that's a really big deal for St. Edward's."
